| Das große Trockenfliegen-Buch |
We don't often review books in German, but it has happened. And since we do have a large German audience - the second largest after the 'merikans - it's not totally out of the way to do so. Of course a lot of our readers will have no direct interest in a German book, but a lot of European readers will. |

| Postcards from the Swiss Alps |
It was a fascination for faraway places and exotic fish that turned my attention to this site almost ten years ago. It was seatrout, salmon and red-bellied char with gaudy flies in their mighty jaws. It was the call of silver and salt and the midnight sun. |

| The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing |
One of the very first fly fishing books I ever purchased was Tom Rosenbauer's "Prospecting For Trout", which I found at the hardware store in Inlet, NY, deep in the Adirondacks. Those were the days when a $15 book purchase required a brief discussion with the missus, as we hadn't quite got on our feet yet and fishing books were still firmly in the luxury category. I still have that book - it is one of my favorites and a volume I pull off the shelf every year around this time as I start to look forward to the season. |

| The Source - Iceland |
I had a bunch of friends who were fishing in Iceland while I was watching this DVD (again) to review it. The DVD did undeniably make me a bit and envious. Because the quality of the Icelandic fishing as shown on Nick Reygaert's latest video is just fantastic! And thinking that four of my best fishing friends were feasting on this as I was locked to a computer monitor working was not reassuring. |

Many years ago, when Colombian Carlos Heinsohn began to tie flies, he didn't have more than a few basic materials and not more than three models of hooks. He wanted a huge dragonfly nymph, so he made one almost entirely with black and brown marabou on a #6 hook with a few wraps of copper wire. |

| Small Fry, 5 |
The white perch is actually an anadromous silver bass in the fish family Moronidae. This game panfish is the little cousin of the striped bass and shares much of the same habitat: the brackish tidal estuaries and adjacent rivers of the mid-Atlantic and New England states. |

| Small Fry, 2 |
The smallmouth bass is the headliner of small coolwater venues and that fact is understandable. Micropterus dolomieui bends fly rods and performs top water acrobatics throughout the course of the fishing season, even during the hottest dog days, as long as the human on the other end of the line knows his or her art and craft. |

Perfection is as illusory in fishing as it is in any other aspect of life, yet practice brings with it certain plateaus of near-perfection. Such stages in a fly fisher’s practice provide a good time and opportunity to branch out. |

| The Rise |
This past weekend, I met a couple friends for a day's fishing on Willowemoc Creek. I was walking back to join the crew when I decided to fiddle with my new camera awhile. You see, one bugaboo picture for me with my other camera was any picture that featured a dark shaded shoreline. The camera usually compensated for the darkness and the photo would be ruined. |

| Opening Day! |
The Opening Day of Trout Season is tomorrow here in New York. I will be meeting some friends to fish somewhere along the West Branch of the Delaware River, a place I have not fished since I moved here from Endicott. Maybe once a couple years ago. There are too many trout streams between where I live now and the West Branch for me to take the drive, even though it's a relatively short drive. |

| Essential Skills - 6 volumes |
I first heard of - or rather saw - Oliver Edwards videos on a cd that was packaged with the British magazine Fly Fishing & Fly Tying. The cd featured some short cuts from the six tapes. I was shown the video snippets on a computer screen by a friend, and was already at that point impressed and intrigued. When my VHS copies arrived one afternoon I broke the seal of the top one - not the first as such, as there seemed to be no obvious sequence - and stuck it in my VCR. And I was spellbound. I saw two complete videos that afternoon. And I was supposed to have worked - |

The guy grew up on the Miramichi? Oh man. I just had to read this one. Who hasn't dreamed of what it would be like to grow up near a river like the Miramichi? In a land largely unspoiled by so-called civilization? Among people with home-grown sensibilities and an intimate knowledge of their world gained not from study but from experience? This is the world Mr. Richards shares with us. |
