Some 30 years ago I came to New Zealand and fell in love with the place, its landscapes, rivers and its trout.

I attended the sneak preview of the video Only the River Knows, formerly known as The Trout Also Rises. Great video! I'm looking forward to reviewing the DVD.

This is one of those books that I wish I bumped into more often. I did actually bump into this one.

"Yous fellas fishin'?" a Maori guy asked on the shore of Lake Otomangakau. I said we were having a look. "Plenty a fish here, bro. Big bastards, too. But bloody hard to catch, ay."

We are used to seeing New Zealand in connection with fly fishing. The North and South Islands renowned fishing for trout is so well covered in video and text that it's almost tiresome... if it wasn't for the fact that it is attractive as well as extremely suitable for pictures and video.
But it's still a great diversion to see a completely different side of these beautiful islands, namely the saltwater fishing! And yes, NZ does have some world class saltwater, which might not match the stream fishing, but judging from this DVD comes very close.

I feel a poem coming...

How's that for a review?

Some readers might think that a poem is not quite enough to make a proper DVD review, so let me elaborate a bit and sketch some of the content:

Seeing this footage of large trout in deep streams rising to nymphs - naturals and artificials - really stirs my appetite to go to New Zealand

I wanna go there!
